What are Westward Leaning sunglasses made from?

Westward Leaning frames are made from high quality acetate and steel, depending on the style.  We take pride in our excellent craftsmanship. 

Our models use the highest quality nylon and CR-39 plastic lenses.  We always use a hard coat to protect your lenses as much as possible from scratches.  We also use anti-reflective coating on the back of all of our lenses for utmost comfort.

Additionally, all of our sunglasses feature Westward Leaning’s signature: a unique material embedded in the temples. These materials, which range from California redwood and aluminum to created coral and lapis, are all sustainably sourced.

Do Westward Leaning sunglasses have UV protection? 

Yes!  Our mirrored lenses contain UV protection. It is very difficult to narrow down the exact UV protection because each lens is hand coated and this creates small variations in production.  After extensive testing, we can guarantee UV protection from 96-100%.  

Are Westward Leaning lenses polarized? 

We use nylon or CR39 plastic lenses - the best in the world. Our lenses undergo one of the most rigorous quality checks in the industry and our customers love our quality.  However, polarization is not possible with these lens types, so our lenses are not polarized. 

Where are Westward Leaning sunglasses made?

Our sunglasses are all handmade Japan and San Francisco. A team of professional artisans works in our San Francisco offices to integrate our lenses and all of the unique materials into the frames by hand. 

Can I order a custom pair?

Absolutely!  Please visit our customizer to create your one-of-a-kind, custom pair of Westward Leaning sunglasses.  You can choose from four classic frame shapes (Pioneer, Voyager, Concorde and Vanguard), and select your own frame color, lenses and unique material.  At this time, it is not possible to customize other frame shapes, but make sure to check back as we will be routinely updating our assortment as new styles become classics.  Please note that custom sunglasses are not eligible for returns. 

How can I improve the fit of my sunglasses?

Our frames can be easily adjusted.  Please check out out guide to adjusting fit for details.  If you are nervous to do this yourself, your local optical shop can help adjust your frames as well.  

How can I best care for my Westward Leaning sunglasses? 

We are proud to offer products made with the best materials and exceptional craftsmanship, and your satisfaction is important to us. We recommend that you store your sunglasses in the provided protective cases at all times when not in use. Rest sunglasses lens-side up to prevent scratching the lenses.

Lenses should be cleaned regularly with either a lens cleaner or fresh water and a soft, clean cloth (we provide such a cloth with all of our sunglasses). Never use paper products to clean lenses.

Although Westward Leaning sunglasses are waterproof, we do not recommend submerging our sunglasses in water as this can deteriorate the adhesives used to inlay unique materials. Moreover, we advise against leaving sunglasses exposed in high temperatures, such as in a car in Arizona in July, as acetate can melt.

Can I put prescription lenses in my Westward Leaning sunglasses? How? 

Yes. Although Westward Leaning does not offer prescription lenses at this time, your optician should be able to fit our sunglasses with lenses with your prescription.

How do I know if the sunglasses will fit me?

What is bridge fit?  

We also offer bridge fit (also known as "Asian fit") in our customizer in the Pioneer black matte frame shape.  We designed this option with nose pads added at the bridge of our glasses for customers who needed a more secure fit to our glasses. If you find that sunglasses without nose pads typically slide off your nose or rest on your cheeks, we recommend you try a bridge fit style. The nose pads do not alter the appearance of our sunglasses when worn, but provide a comfortable, secure fit.  

Does Westward Leaning offer Small or Large versions of standard frames?

Yes!  While the majority of our sunglasses are available in a standard size that fits 90% of customers, we offer two size variations in our customizer in the Pioneer black shiny frame. The small and large frames are scaled down and up versions, respectively, and are appropriate for customers who’ve experienced problems with the fit of sunglasses in the past and know that sunglasses typically fit too large or too small on them. The pair I want is sold out. How does the waitlist work? 

If you sign up for a specific pair’s waitlist, you will receive an email letting you know when the style is back in stock.

Can you help me pick a pair?

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes!  We offer gift cards in the amounts of $50, $100, $150, and $200.

Can I use my gift card multiple times, or can I use multiple gift cards together?

Gift cards are valid for one purchase only, and we only accept one gift card per transaction.

What payment options do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and Amex), as well as PayPal, Apple Pay and Westward Leaning gift cards.

Is my payment secure? 

We take security very seriously and guarantee a secure payment process.

Is my personal information kept private? 

Your privacy is important to us. Your personal information will always be kept private, and we will never share it with a third party.

How long does it take to process an order?

We will fulfill and ship all orders received by 2pm PST the same day, Monday through Friday. Orders received after 2pm PST will be fulfilled and shipped the next, or on Monday for orders placed on Friday afternoon, Saturday or Sunday. You will receive a confirmation email after placing your order and a second email upon shipment.

How can I check the status of my order? 

You will receive an email after your order has been processed with tracking information for your package.

What types of shipping do you offer? What does shipping cost?

We offer complimentary USPS shipping on all domestic orders. Delivery times are typically 3 days or less. If you'd like faster delivery, you can upgrade your shipping to Fedex 2Day or Fedex Overnight Priority shipping.  Please note that Fedex is unable to deliver to P.O. boxes; therefore, expedited shipping is not available for orders sent to P.O. boxes.  

For international orders, all relevant taxes and duties are calculated at checkout. We assume liability for any additional charges. If your country is not listed above, we regret that we cannot ship to your locations due to new restrictions on international import/exports. We deeply apologize for this inconvenience, and are working hard to find an alternative.

We know many of you will be disappointed that we no longer ship to your region; this is solely because we've transitioned entirely to electronic trade documents (ETD), which only works with the countries listed above. We look forward to the expansion of ETD capabilities, particularly in Latin America, and will be the first to offer shipping to those regions when it becomes available.

Can I expedite my order?

Yes, simply select expedited shipping in checkout.  Additional fees will apply. 

Why do I have to pay for duties and import taxes on orders shipped outside the US?

Many countries levy duties and import taxes on products shipped from other countries. Unfortunately, these customs charges are entirely outside our control but will be calculated at checkout for your convenience.

Does Westward Leaning insure packages? Do I have to sign for delivery?

Westward Leaning does not insure packages, and no signature is required for delivery.

Can I change or cancel my order? 

You can change or cancel your order until 1pm on the day that your package will be shipped. 

ABOUT RETURNS & REPAIRS


How long do I have to make a return? 

You are welcome to return any item within 30 days of receipt. All U.S. orders arrive with a pre-paid return label and instructions included. For a full refund, products must be returned in mint condition, with all original packaging (box, hard case, soft case, cleaning cloth). Please allow 5 business days for return shipping, and up to 14 business days for the refund to post to your account. 

Due to the complexity of international customs, we are unable to facilitate international returns at this time. Therefore, the complimentary FedEx label included with your order is only valid for shipments within the United States.  If you wish to assume responsibility for the cost and logistics of international shipping, kindly send your package to our office within 30 days of receipt to be eligible for a refund:

Can I exchange my sunglasses for a different pair?

We cannot process exchanges. If you would like to exchange an item, simply return your purchase for a refund using the provided pre-paid label (it’s easy, we promise!), and place a new order online.

Do my Westward Leaning sunglasses have a warranty? 

We are proud of the quality of our product and guarantee our frames to the purchaser for one year from date of purchase. This warranty protects against any defects in manufacturing or craftsmanship of the frames - defined as a fracture in the frame acetate, a lost or loose hinge, discoloration of finishes not associated with normal wear, and a broken or missing side inlay. This warranty does not cover damage due to normal wear and tear, misuse or improper storage of the product.  If your frames are damaged and meet the aforementioned conditions, please send a photo to help@westwardleaning.com.

If your frames are outside of the warranty you can also pay to get them repaired. Pricing for repairs is determined on a case-by-case basis and is subject to stock availability.

What if I scratch my lenses?

Our lenses undergo one of the most rigorous inspections in the industry and our customers love our quality. However, we understand that with everyday use, lenses can get scratched. If you scratch your lenses, we offer a repair service to get you back in your sunnies good as new! We offer this repair service for a fee of $75, which covers the cost of repair as well as all shipping. Please email help@westwardleaning.com to set up your repair.
